Road Trip! Day Three – Memphis to Tulsa

Welcome back friends for day three of Billy’s road trip across America!

This morning we started out from Memphis bright and early, and stopped outside of the city for breakfast.  The weather was not great from the beginning, and we knew it was going to rain all day.

The first state outside of Tennesee we came to was Arkansas!  They had a nice welcome center, and of course, we posed for the obligatory photo!

We continued on heading to Little Rock, and on our way there decided stopping at the Bill Clinton Presidential Library would be a fun and interesting stop.  We really enjoyed our visit to the library.  There are three floors of exhibits and you could easily spend a couple of hours here.

You are greeted right as you walk into the library by the limousine Clinton used during his presidency.

Starting at the third level you have the only true to size replica of the Oval Office.

As you can see here Mom is eyeing the office for herself!

Once inside you can have the staff take a photo that you can purchase later, and seeing as how my mother is The Boss, it was a must do.

On the next level down you will find a theater showing the life and times of Bill Clinton from early life, and onto his presidency.  On the same level is the replica of the Cabinet Room from inside the White House.

On the same level, you enter the actual library and look down onto the first level.  All along the walls of the second level are gifts from US citizens to the President, as well as gifts from other heads of state. Also, take note of the large pillars on either side, they are filled with blue binders holding all the documents from Clinton’s presidency.

There is a gorgeous Chihuly sculpture.

I really enjoyed the dining table with the Clinton china.

Down on the first level are areas sectioned off areas highlighting the economy, world relations, technology, and many other parts of his presidency.

In the center under each year are silver binders you can open and see his detailed schedule for each day of every year he was our President.

Outside of the very unique modern building that is the library is the Clinton Presidential Park Bridge.  The former railroad bridge was built in 1899 and is now a walkway across the Arkansas River.  The structure is impressive and looking back at the library it’s wonderful how the old contracts the new.

As we were in Little Rock we decided to make our way over to the Governors Mansion, as this is where Clinton lived while Governor of Arkansas and many of his presidential campaign announcements were made from.

The mansion itself sits behind lovely gates, which I decided not to get too close to.

The neighborhood surrounding the gubernatorial mansion is filled with amazing homes, we didn’t know where to look next as they were all so beautiful!

Our last stop in Little Rock was at Little Rock Central High School.

This was where in 1957 nine African American students entered what up until that point was an all-white high school, needless to say, things did not go well.  The governor of Arkansas at that time ended up fighting President Eisenhower on the forced desegregation, and troops were brought in so the students could attend school.  The building is stunning, and there is a museum across the street.  It was very powerful standing in front of a building where one of the pivotal events for equal rights played out for all the world to see.

After touring Little Rock we started making our way to see my mother’s friends in the Tulsa area of Oklahoma, Bixby to be exact.  The ride through northwest Arkansas was beautiful, and I wish that it had not been raining so hard.

We then crossed the border into Oklahoma. The welcome center was lovely, but by this point, it was getting cold as well, hence me laughing in the photo while cold rain pelted me!

Not long after entering Oklahoma the scenery turns to flat land, with farms, and small towns.  It’s very simple, pretty, and the heartland of America.

Mom and I would like to thank our hosts George and Heidi for inviting us into their home and showing such lovely hospitality.

Tomorrow friends we are off to Amarillo, see you soon!
